Metro Arts Galleries
10 – 17 November 2012
Opening Wednesday 14 November 6pm
This exhibition brings together works constructed over the last five years of my practice. I build dwellings, spaces for artworks to reside in, to make work in, for viewers to visit. They become portable studios, solitary spaces for contemplative drawing; and extensions for the body, prosthetics that both facilitate and constrain the performance of drawing. In the gallery, they operate as spatial prosthetics, adaptable environments to house drawings, sound sculptures and video works. They are spaces in which to dwell on those ideas that preoccupy me… the performativity of making, the limits of language and expression, gender politics and the constraints of art history and philosophy. The practice performs a playful mixing of language codes and systems drawn from abstraction, conceptual art, pop music, literature and philosophy – and enacts a gendered ‘redrawing’ of these texts.
